Wednesday, April 13th, 2016Steven Kennard DemonstrationSteven Kennard, internationally-recognized woodturner from Canning, Nova Scotia, will do an evening demonstration/presentation for SWG. Steven will do an audiovisual presentation of introduction and explanations of work over the years ending with the Turns video and a brief questions and answers session. After that he will demonstrate the making of a teardrop box in African blackwood, from the raw material to the polished piece.

Tuesday, May 10th, 2016SWG Monthly MeetingWoodturnings can be embellished by incorporating decorative enamelled pieces as accents. Enamel, more properly, vitreous enamel, is a thin layer of glass, transparent or opaque, heat-fused to a metal substrate. Carl Durance will demostrate the process of creating a decorative enamelled piece, including metal preparation, variety of application techniques of enamel to metal, fusing enamel to metal using kiln or torch, and application of enamelled piece to wood turning. The presentation will cover some of the science behind the process of vitreous enamelling.

GBWG booth will be located in the parking lot on the north-east corner of Goderich and Mill streets in Port Elgin, behind Cathy's Flowers 'N Treasures.
Tuesday, October 11th, 2016SWG Monthly MeetingFrank DiDomizio, from the Kawartha Woodturners Guild, will share his experience of creating a decorative platter with an emphasis on embellishments. The basic turning sequence for a platter will be covered. After turning, a number of embellishing techniques, including dyeing, texturing, carving, and pyrography, will be demonstrated. These same techniques can be used to embellish other turned objects.
Tuesday, November 8th, 2016SWG Monthly MeetingCarl Durance will demonstrate Stave Construction, Linear and Compound. Old wooden pails and kegs (or barrels) were constructed using staves. Learn how to create vessels using stave-construction techniques, both linear and compound, including calculating cut angles (blade and miter) and building a cutting jig and gluing jig. A variety of stave constructed vessels will be shown during the presentation.

Tuesday, June 13th, 2017SWG Monthly MeetingWood veneers can be incorporated in woodturned forms to create highly decorative pieces with stunning accents. Carl Durance will demonstrate the process of working with veneers, including cutting veneers, with xacto knife and fret saw, gluing multi-laminate veneer stacks, adding veneer accents to turning blanks, bending multi-layer veneers into forms, and include an introduction to marquetry and parquetry.

Tuesday, August 8th, 2017SWG Monthly MeetingHow to keep wood turning tools sharp will be the focus of the August meeting. Various methods of maintaining properly sharpened tools will be demonstrated. Kelvin Stuart will demonstrate a wet sharpening method using a Tormek setup. George Jazzar will demonstrate dry sharpening, including the use of CBN wheels. An open discussion will provide opportunity for other sharpening techniques to be presented.

Tuesday, October 10th, 2017SWG Monthly MeetingThe SWG is working toward supporting the Bravery Beads Bowl project at the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. To this end Tim Kennedy and Nick van Bakel have put together a demo on how to make a Bravery Bead Bowl. The boxes are based on a segmented ring structure and Nick and Tim will take us through the various construction stages including the development of the segment rings, how the required segments will be cut, gluing and clamping of the segment rings and the final construction and turning of the box. Dave Bell will provide suggestions for mold making, resin choices, coloring with dyes/pigments, clear casting, pressure pot requirements, pre-casting solutions and post casting processing. During the demonstration there will be various castings performed for pen blanks, wine stoppers/handles. There will also be some live edge techniques shown for other casting ideas.
